Rodger joined a foundation course at York school of Art and then went on to do a B.A. in sculpture at Bath Academy of Art. Throughout this period he worked as a part-time studio assistant for the sculptress Sally Arnup, and at the end of his degree course in 1974, went on to the Royal College of Art to complete a course in Bronze Casting & Foundry practice with Bert Angeloni and Tissa Ranasinghe.

Rodger then set up and ran a foundry in Yorkshire for two years, mainly casting Sally's work, before joining Christine at Kippford and helping to set up a bronze foundry and pottery at Barnbarroch old school. In latter years his casting skills have been adapted for mould making in relation to ceramics.
